Jan. 6 officers to support Biden in key states during campaign
The Biden campaign has announced that veteran officers who bravely defended the Capitol during the attack on Jan. 6, 2021, will be campaigning for President Biden in key battleground states. Former Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, and D.C. police officer Danny Hodges will serve as surrogates to warn voters about the potential consequences of a second term for Donald Trump.
These officers will be traveling to states like Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New Hampshire in the coming weeks and months to emphasize Trump’s support for the Jan. 6 rioters and his concerning statements about becoming a dictator on “day one” if re-elected. Trump’s rhetoric of a potential “bloodbath” in the event of a Biden victory further fuels the urgency of their message.
Having personally experienced the violence of the Capitol attack, Gonell, Dunn, and Hodges have emerged as important voices in reminding the public of the events of Jan. 6. Despite attempts by some Republicans to downplay the severity of the violence, these officers continue to shed light on the truth of that day.
While a U.S. Capitol plaque in honor of the police heroes of Jan. 6 was supposed to be installed by March 2023, delays in the process have kept this recognition pending. This highlights the ongoing struggle to fully acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices made by law enforcement during the attack.
Harry Dunn’s bid for the Democratic nomination in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District, though unsuccessful, demonstrates his dedication to public service. The Biden campaign stresses that these officers will engage with elected officials and law enforcement organizations to sound the alarm about the dangers of a second Trump administration.
In a statement, Dunn expressed grave concerns over Trump’s behavior, labeling it as a direct threat to democracy. He emphasized the importance of rejecting Trump’s extremism and upholding the values of democracy and law enforcement by supporting Joe Biden in the upcoming election.
The Department of Justice’s ongoing investigations into the Capitol assault have resulted in charges against over 1,200 individuals, with numerous guilty pleas and convictions. This legal response underscores the severity of the events that unfolded on Jan. 6 and the need for accountability.
Recalling the horrors of that day, Officer Hodges shared his harrowing experience of being physically assaulted by rioters. His account serves as a stark reminder of the violence and chaos that erupted within the Capitol building.
President Biden’s observance of the Capitol assault each January signifies his commitment to honoring the memory of the events and acknowledging the resilience of those who defended the Capitol. By commemorating this dark chapter in American history, Biden underscores the importance of accountability and remembrance.
As the veteran officers embark on their campaign to advocate for Biden and raise awareness about the dangers of a potential Trump re-election, their voices serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of upholding democracy, protecting law enforcement, and preventing the normalization of political violence. Their courage and strength in the face of adversity exemplify the resilience and dedication of those who serve on the front lines to safeguard our nation’s values.
