Jason Crow warns that Democrats could lose the election if things don’t change.
Washington — Rep. Jason Crow, a Colorado Democrat, has raised concerns about the potential outcome of the upcoming election following President Biden’s lackluster debate performance last month, stating that there is a “high risk” of Democrats losing unless significant changes are made.
In an appearance on “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Crow, a member of the centrist New Democrat Coalition, expressed unease about the current political landscape, saying, “Reading the tea leaves is very troubling for many of us right now. So we want to see a change.”
Recent weeks have seen a growing number of lawmakers urging the president to consider stepping aside, with 19 lawmakers voicing their concerns after Mr. Biden’s recent news conference, where he displayed competence in addressing intricate foreign affairs matters but failed to alleviate worries within his party.
Further fueling the disquiet within the party, Mr. Biden engaged in a conversation with a group of centrist Democrats on Saturday, including Crow, where concerns about the president’s standing in key battleground states were brought to the fore. Crow reportedly emphasized to the president that voters in crucial battleground districts were starting to doubt his ability to project strength on the international stage, leading to what was described as a “heated” exchange.
Despite the tough questions posed, Crow maintained his support for Mr. Biden’s accomplishments in national security and foreign policy, acknowledging the president as one of the most effective in generations. However, he emphasized the need for a more effective messaging strategy to secure a win in the upcoming election.
The pressing questions facing the Democratic Party revolve around how to revamp their approach, communicate their vision effectively, and ensure their message resonates with voters to secure victory. Crow highlighted the importance of having honest conversations and addressing concerns to navigate the challenging political landscape.
While Mr. Biden reiterated his commitment to staying in the race, stating that he would not give up the nomination, Crow acknowledged the president’s decision-making authority, recognizing that members of the party can voice their opinions and engage in constructive dialogues to address prevailing challenges.
Following a candid call with the president to express their concerns, Crow emphasized the necessity of deliberating tough questions and collectively determining the best path forward to enhance their chances in the election.
It remains to be seen how the Democratic Party will navigate the complex political terrain in the run-up to the election, but with open dialogue, strategic messaging, and a unified approach, they aim to bolster their position and secure a favorable outcome.
