JD Vance and others believe Biden should resign as president if he leaves the race.
Newly minted Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance shared his thoughts in an X post on Friday, highlighting the concern that if Democrats doubt President Biden’s mental acuity to run for re-election, then how can they justify him continuing as President until next January?
Vance stated, “If Joe Biden doesn’t have the cognitive function to run for re-election, then he certainly doesn’t have the cognitive function to remain as Commander-In-Chief. How can any Dem pushing him to drop out of the presidential race argue in good faith that he should stay on as POTUS?”
Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., echoed a similar sentiment during the Republican National Convention press conference in Milwaukee on Thursday. Rubio questioned, “The question is, if he’s not going to be their nominee because he’s not up to it, how can he be our president for the next six months?”
Furthermore, polling guru and FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver expressed his belief earlier this month that Biden should “transition the presidency to Vice President Kamala Harris within 30-60 days.” He emphasized, “Something is clearly wrong here.”
Adding to the call for Biden to step down, Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., also emphasized the importance of Americans feeling confident in their president’s ability to lead. She stated, “The crisis of confidence in the president’s leadership needs to come to an end. The president should do what he knows is right for the country and put the national interest first.”
Increasing numbers of Democrats have voiced their concerns about Biden’s ability to win against Trump, especially after his lackluster debate performance last month. Historian Alexis Coe went as far as writing in a Rolling Stone op-ed that Biden should resign to “preserve his legacy.”
Presidential historian Allan Lichtman, known for accurately predicting elections, suggested that if Biden were to step down, allowing Harris to take his place on the Democratic ticket would be their best chance at retaining the White House in November.
Despite the mounting pressure and calls for him to drop out, Biden and his campaign have reiterated that he is determined to win. However, reports have surfaced indicating that he may be reconsidering his decision in light of the increasing demands for him to step aside.
