Jeremy Dutcher wins award for ‘Motewolonuwok’.
Jeremy Dutcher has made history by winning the 2024 Polaris Music Prize for his album “Motewolonuwok,” becoming the first artist to win the prestigious award twice. Dutcher will receive the $50,000 prize, awarded to the best Canadian album of the year based solely on artistic merit and chosen by a panel of experts. His previous win was in 2018 for his album “Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.”
Accepting the award, Dutcher expressed gratitude to his audience, stating, “I just wanna say I love you all, I can only do this cause you’re here to listen, and that means so much to me.” He continued by emphasizing the importance of showcasing art and music in Indigenous languages and aesthetics. Dutcher concluded his speech by encouraging others to shine their light for the world.
Competing against a tough field of nine other shortlisted albums, Dutcher’s victory solidified his position as a groundbreaking artist. The shortlisted albums included works by Cindy Lee, NOBRO, TOBi, DijahSB, Allison Russell, Bambii, Elisapie, The Beaches, and Charlotte Cardin.
The Polaris Gala, where the prize was awarded, took place at Massey Hall in Toronto and was hosted by the 2023 Polaris Music Prize winner Debby Friday. The gala celebrated the Canadian music industry’s unique talent and diversity, highlighting the artistry and creativity of up-and-coming artists.
