Jewish groups criticize Harris’ choice of Walz as ‘far left nightmare’
Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to choose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate has sparked a range of reactions from Jewish organizations, generating both praise and concern. The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) expressed skepticism, referencing Walz’s past comments on socialism, while others speculated that Harris’ choice was influenced by Democratic Party members sympathetic to Palestinians amid ongoing conflicts in Israel and Gaza.
Harris reportedly deliberated between Walz and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, ultimately selecting Walz over the only Jewish candidate under consideration. Some critics labeled Shapiro as “No Genocide Josh” in an attempt to pressure Harris, prompting accusations of anti-Semitism from Rep. Jake Auchincloss.
Concerns have risen among supporters of Israel regarding Harris’ stance on the Jewish state, citing her calls for a cease-fire in Gaza and strained relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The RJC raised alarms about Walz’s connections to Rep. Ilhan Omar, condemning her as anti-Israel and anti-Semitic.
However, the Jewish Democratic Council for America (JDCA) offered a positive viewpoint, lauding Harris and Walz for aligning with the values of Jewish voters. JDCA CEO Halie Soifer expressed confidence in the pair’s ability to secure victory in the upcoming election, emphasizing their dedication to defending reproductive rights and democracy.
Similarly, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action commended the selection of Walz, highlighting his investments in public education, infrastructure, and social welfare programs. The organization’s CEO, Jamie Beran, praised Harris for prioritizing a caring economy over fear and division.
Overall, Harris’ decision to pick Walz as her running mate has ignited a mix of reactions within the Jewish community, reflecting a spectrum of perspectives and priorities. As the election approaches, the impact of this choice on Jewish American voters remains a point of interest and discussion.
