Jill Biden to head effort to bring back immigrant families who were separated
After three years, hundreds of children are still separated from their parents at the border, a lingering consequence of Donald Trump’s harsh policies. Now, with Joe Biden in charge, efforts are underway to right this wrong, but the process is not without challenges, particularly in locating deported parents.
In a promising move, first lady Jill Biden has taken the lead in a task force dedicated to reuniting families. This announcement from the White House signals a step in the right direction.
Currently, over 628 children remain disconnected from their loved ones. These children have been placed in foster care or with distant relatives after enduring harrowing conditions while detained. Journalist Jacob Soboroff vividly described the scene he witnessed, with children sitting on cold concrete floors under Mylar blankets, closely watched by security contractors. The memories haunt him to this day.
President Biden has not shied away from criticizing the cruel separations that occurred under the previous administration, condemning the actions that tore families apart.
The decision by Jill Biden to spearhead efforts for reunification stands in stark contrast to the indifference shown by her predecessor towards the suffering experienced by migrant children in detention camps.
Melania Trump’s infamous jacket with the message “I really don’t care. Do U?” sparked outrage during a visit to a border facility in 2018, further highlighting the callous attitude towards the issue.
Notably, Jill Biden has entrusted her chief of staff, Julissa Reynoso, with the crucial task of monitoring the reunification process. Reynoso, a first-generation immigrant with a legal background, visited a refugee camp that deeply affected her, emphasizing the need for a more compassionate approach.
Advocates are urging President Biden to grant U.S. citizenship to all migrant families who suffered the trauma of separation, a plea echoed in the video above.
