Jim Clyburn supports Biden but is open to new candidate.

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) has been a pivotal figure in President Joe Biden’s career, especially during the 2020 primary campaign. Clyburn’s unwavering support played a significant role in reviving Biden’s campaign when it was in jeopardy. Despite recent doubts about Biden’s ability to run for reelection, Clyburn stands by the president and believes he is mentally fit to continue leading the country.

In a recent interview on NBC’s “Today” show, Clyburn expressed his confidence in Biden, stating, “Physically? I don’t think so. Mentally? I do think so.” He highlighted Biden’s understanding of democracy, the nation’s future, and the importance of maintaining relationships with allies worldwide. Clyburn’s endorsement of Biden in the 2020 South Carolina primary was a turning point that helped propel Biden to victory and eventually to the White House.

While Clyburn remains supportive of Biden, he also recognizes the president’s right to make his own decision regarding a reelection bid. Despite calls from some Capitol Hill Democrats for Biden to step aside, Clyburn emphasizes the importance of focusing on the administration’s record, the alternative candidates, and allowing Biden to choose his own path.

Following a press conference where Biden addressed concerns and reaffirmed his commitment to remain in the race, three more House Democrats joined the ranks of those calling for Biden to consider stepping down. However, Clyburn believes Democrats have until the national convention in Chicago on August 19 to reach a decision.

If Biden were to drop out, Clyburn has voiced his support for Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential successor. He praised Harris for her recent performance and her ability to handle intense scrutiny, stating, “I think she’s demonstrated, especially these recent weeks, when all of this microscope has been focused on her and him, she has acquitted herself famously.”

As the political landscape continues to evolve and potential contenders emerge, Clyburn’s perspective offers insight into the dynamics of the Democratic Party and the upcoming election. Whether Biden ultimately decides to run for reelection or pass the torch to another candidate, Clyburn’s support and considerations will undoubtedly influence the party’s direction in the months ahead.
