Joe Biden criticizes Marco Rubio for claiming jobs numbers are fake.
President Joe Biden surprised everyone by making an unexpected appearance in the White House briefing room on Friday to share some positive news about the economy. During his address, he took aim at a Republican senator who dismissed the latest job numbers as “fake.”
In a direct challenge to his critics, Biden declared, “Anything the MAGA Republicans don’t like, they call fake. Anything. Job numbers are what the job numbers are. They’re real.”
The latest government report revealed that the national unemployment rate had dropped from 4.2% to 4.1% in September, accompanied by the addition of 254,000 jobs to the economy. These numbers exceeded expectations and have provided a significant boost to Democrats and Vice President Kamala Harris as they head into the upcoming presidential election.
Senator Marco Rubio from Florida drew attention earlier in the day by baselessly claiming that the job figures had been fabricated to benefit Harris. “Another fake jobs report from the Biden-Harris government,” Rubio declared on social media, citing perceived discrepancies in past revisions.
While it is true that these numbers undergo revisions, Rubio failed to provide any substantial evidence to support his claims that media outlets play a role in manipulating the data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the agency responsible for these reports, utilizes additional data to refine their estimates over the following months.
Rubio’s assertions are reminiscent of former President Donald Trump’s tactics before the 2016 election, where he inaccurately stated that the unemployment rate was much higher than it actually was. Recently, Trump has shifted his focus towards exaggerating inflation rates instead.
In correcting Rubio’s misrepresentation of the data, Biden pointed out that the most recent revisions actually increased employment estimates for July and August by 72,000 jobs. He also noted the success of the American Rescue Plan and other economic policies in maintaining low unemployment rates while simultaneously reducing inflation.
Under Biden’s leadership, the nation has generated over 16 million jobs since he assumed office. Additionally, Biden highlighted the misconception that inflation could only be curbed through substantial job losses or jeopardizing the economy’s stability.
