Johnson highlights Republican Party’s unity and successful fundraising before RNC.
The House GOP is celebrating a major achievement as the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) announces a record-breaking fundraising total for the second quarter of 2024. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is highlighting the unity and strength of the Republican Party as they head to Milwaukee to nominate President Trump.
Johnson expressed his confidence in the party’s unity and readiness to win at all levels, stating, “Our party has never been more united, energized, and equipped with the resources needed to win up and down the ballot.”
The NRCC revealed that they raised an impressive $37 million in the second quarter, marking their highest-ever election year total for that time period. Additionally, the committee reported a record-breaking June, with $14.3 million raised in that month alone.
This fundraising success has silenced doubts about Johnson’s ability to match the fundraising achievements of his predecessor, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Johnson himself raised $23.5 million in the second quarter of 2024.
Combined with the $46.4 million raised by the Congressional Leadership Fund, House Republicans have added over $100 million to their war chest in this quarter. This financial support comes just before the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin, where former President Trump will be officially declared the party’s nominee for November.
The surge in fundraising reflects Republicans’ growing confidence in maintaining and possibly expanding their narrow House majority. This sentiment has been bolstered by concerns within the Democratic Party following President Biden’s lackluster performance in a late June debate against Trump.
Biden’s poor showing has sparked doubts among Democrats about his ability to secure a victory in the upcoming election and serve another term. This unease led 17 House Democrats and one Democratic senator to call on Biden to withdraw from the race.
While the impact of the debate on GOP fundraising remains to be fully seen, Johnson remains optimistic about his party’s chances. He stated, “Our candidates have (done) very well in going out and presenting those answers in a very credible way. We feel very good about what we’re doing.”
In response to Johnson’s remarks, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) emphasized their consistent fundraising success over the NRCC. They attributed this achievement to their authentic candidates with proven records of results, contrasting them with what they described as extreme Republicans promoting chaos through policies like a nationwide abortion ban and middle-class tax increases.
As the fundraising competition heats up and the political landscape continues to evolve, both parties are gearing up for a fierce battle ahead of the November elections. The stage is set for a high-stakes showdown, with the future of the House majority hanging in the balance.
