Kamala Harris announces she will run for president in 2024 after Biden’s decision to not run.
Vice President Kamala Harris has officially announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president, following President Biden’s decision to suspend his re-election campaign.
In a statement released on Sunday, Harris expressed her gratitude for the President’s endorsement and declared her intention to earn and secure the nomination.
Shortly after President Biden made public his decision to withdraw from the race, he took to social media to endorse Harris as the Democratic nominee, emphasizing his unwavering support for her candidacy.
Harris lauded Biden’s decision as a selfless and patriotic act, highlighting his lifelong commitment to placing the interests of the American people and the nation above all.
Former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and various Democratic lawmakers have also thrown their support behind Harris’s presidential bid. However, some Democrats have refrained from explicitly endorsing Harris in their statements following Biden’s announcement.
The mounting pressure on Biden to step aside intensified after a lackluster debate performance against former President Trump last month. Prior to his formal decision, a group of 37 congressional Democrats and their affiliates had urged Biden to withdraw from the race.
Despite the mounting calls for him to exit the race, Biden had remained resolute about his candidacy until his recent announcement to suspend his re-election campaign.
