Kamala Harris catching up to Trump in latest poll
Excitement is in the air as Vice President Kamala Harris is reinvigorating voters across the nation. A recent poll conducted following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign revealed that Harris, now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, is neck and neck with former President Donald Trump. The New York Times and Siena College poll, released on Thursday, shows that if the election were to take place today, 47% of likely voters would choose Harris while 48% would opt for Trump.
When looking at registered voters, the numbers are quite similar with 46% in favor of Harris and 48% backing Trump. The poll surveyed 1,142 individuals from July 22 to July 24, showing a tight race between the two candidates. This development has given hope to Democrats who believe that Harris entering the presidential race may shake things up, especially after Trump consistently led in polls against Biden for weeks. A Times-Siena poll from early July had Trump leading Biden by 6 percentage points.
President Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he would not seek another term in office comes after facing backlash from a lackluster performance in a debate on June 27. The recent poll also revealed that a significant 70% of Democrats want the party to rally behind Harris quickly instead of exploring other potential candidates. This unity seems to be materializing, as Biden wasted no time endorsing Harris on Sunday, with other prominent Democrats following suit, including governors who were once seen as strong contenders for the nomination.
According to The New York Times, Harris’ popularity among Democrats is on par with Trump’s popularity among Republicans, standing at around 93%. The Democratic National Convention delegates are set to officially nominate Harris as their candidate by Aug. 7, with the DNC scheduled for Aug. 19 to 22 in Chicago. As of now, Harris has not announced her running mate.
Despite the buzz surrounding Harris, the Trump campaign remains unfazed. A memo released earlier this week by Trump’s pollster, Tony Fabrizio, dismissed the expected surge in the polls for Harris as the “Harris honeymoon.” Fabrizio predicts that Trump will pull ahead once the race “settles back down.”
