Kamala Harris considering about 12 people for VP role
Vice President Kamala Harris is in the process of selecting her potential running mate for the upcoming election, with approximately a dozen individuals currently under consideration. This number is larger than initially reported, indicating that the campaign is beginning the process by considering a broad range of candidates without narrowing down the list just yet.
The list of possible running mates includes several governors such as Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Tim Walz of Minnesota, J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. In addition to governors, members of the Biden administration like Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are also being evaluated, along with Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and others.
Interestingly, the team responsible for vetting the potential running mates, led by former Attorney General Eric Holder, has already begun discussions with some of the candidates. Harris’ team plans to complete the vetting process by August 7 to meet the Ohio deadline for certifying nominees for ballot access, following the selection process designed to have the presidential and vice presidential candidates finalized beforehand.
Given Harris’ strong support among Democratic delegates, she is seen as the likely Democratic nominee for the upcoming election. However, some of the potential VP candidates have not confirmed receiving vetting requests or have been noncommittal when asked about accepting the role if offered.
