Breaking News: Vice President Kamala Harris Secures 99% of Democratic Delegates in Virtual Roll Call Vote

The Democratic National Committee recently closed its virtual roll call vote, with Vice President Kamala Harris emerging as the overwhelming favorite, securing the votes of 99% of the participating delegates. This announcement was made late Monday by Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison and Minyon Moore, the Democratic National Convention committee chair. The next step involves the certification of the roll call results by the convention’s secretary, Jason Rae, formalizing Harris’ position as the Democratic nominee set to challenge Republican nominee Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.

Harrison and Moore revealed plans for a “celebratory” roll call at the convention later this month, signaling a historic moment for Harris and the Democratic Party as a whole.

The roll call of state delegations was originally scheduled to take place virtually, weeks prior to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which is slated to begin on August 19. Harris achieved the necessary number of delegates for the presidential ticket spot on Friday, following the commencement of virtual voting the day before. In a call with campaign supporters, she expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States.”

The vice president articulated her intentions to formally accept the nomination once voting concluded, capping off a whirlwind two weeks of political activity since launching her campaign in response to President Biden’s exit from the race. The roll call solidifies the impending general election face-off between Harris and Trump, who secured the Republican presidential nomination during the party’s recent convention.

As the Republican Party adjusts its focus to Harris, following their criticism of Mr. Biden during their convention, Harris has garnered widespread support, receiving endorsements from various party leaders. To secure the nomination, she needed the backing of 2,350 delegates, a threshold she easily surpassed on Friday.

While Harris has yet to reveal her choice for running mate, speculation suggests an announcement could be forthcoming on Tuesday. Her campaign has reportedly vetted numerous contenders, including governors from key battleground states crucial for victory in November.

On the technical side of the DNC’s roll call process, electronic voting by delegates commenced on August 1 at 9 a.m. ET and concluded on August 5 at 6 p.m. ET. Delegates utilized a personalized and watermarked form for casting their votes, with tallies being managed by the DNC itself.

One key question that arose during the roll call centered around delegates pledged to candidates who had withdrawn from the race. With Mr. Biden having amassed enough delegates earlier in the year, the fate of his delegates remained uncertain. However, with overwhelming support for Harris, she solidified her position as the presidential nominee.

As the nation eagerly anticipates the unfolding of the 2024 election cycle, Vice President Kamala Harris stands poised to lead the charge for the Democratic Party, ready to take on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
