Kamala Harris is now the Vice-President of the United States
Kamala Harris has made history as the first woman, first Black American, and first Asian American to be sworn in as the vice-president of the United States. This inauguration is a momentous occasion, especially for women of color across the country.
Her background as the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrant parents has shaped her identity as a proud American. Harris has emphasized that her Black and Indian heritages hold equal importance in defining who she is.
Furthermore, Harris is the first vice-president of the U.S. to graduate from a historically Black college or university. She obtained her degree from Howard University in Washington in 1986, highlighting her commitment to education and diversity.
When Harris was selected as Joe Biden’s running mate, the President of Howard University, Wayne A. I. Frederick, recognized the significance of this moment. He emphasized that Harris’ historic achievement acknowledges the leadership and contributions of Black women throughout history.
Glynda Carr, the national director of Higher Heights, a political action committee focused on electing more Black women to government positions, expressed that Harris will bring her diverse identities into decision-making rooms. Carr highlighted a pivotal moment during the debates when Harris asserted, “I’m speaking,” resonating with women of all backgrounds who have experienced similar challenges in being heard.
On Inauguration Day, Harris took the oath of office alongside President Joe Biden in a ceremony that marked a stark contrast from previous inaugurations due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and security concerns following the Capitol insurrection.
Just two weeks before the inauguration, the Capitol was attacked by a violent mob of pro-Trump supporters, resulting in multiple casualties, including police officers. The rioters engaged in destructive behavior, causing harm to law enforcement officers and attempting to locate and harm lawmakers during the certification process of Biden and Harris’ election victory.
Despite the challenges and threats faced leading up to the inauguration, Kamala Harris’ swearing-in as vice-president symbolizes a significant step forward for representation and diversity in American politics.
