Kamala Harris’ sorority starts PAC with other Black fraternities.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ college sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, is making big moves in support of one of its most distinguished members vying for the White House. Alpha Kappa Alpha, a longstanding historically black sorority and a part of the revered “Divine Nine,” holds significant influence within the black community.

To help bolster Harris’ campaign, the sorority has established its own political action committee, known as AKA 1908 PAC. This PAC will have the capacity to receive donations of up to $5,000 from sorority members and their relatives, aiming to rally support for Harris’s bid for the presidency.

Harris has actively courted the backing of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the other Divine Nine organizations. She addressed the AKA’s annual conference in July and extended an invitation to the Divine Nine to visit the White House shortly after taking office in 2021—an unprecedented move that marked the first time the group had direct engagement with a U.S. president or vice president.

Collectively, the Divine Nine boasts a membership of approximately 2.5 million individuals nationwide. Following President Biden’s exit from the 2024 presidential race, Harris experienced a surge in support from voters of color. The latest polls indicate that Harris has rapidly closed the gap with Trump, with several surveys even showing her in a slight lead. Nonetheless, some Democratic strategists caution against complacency, citing potential risks of overconfidence in Harris’s candidacy.

Renowned strategist David Axelrod cautioned against excessive optimism, noting that despite Harris’s momentum, the competition remains fierce. The current polling suggests a closely contested race, emphasizing the hard-fought battle awaiting both sides.

Axelrod articulated, “There’s a lot of irrational exuberance on the Democratic side of the aisle right now, because there was despair for some period of time about what November was gonna look like. Now people feel like there’s a chance. Look, I mean, there’s a lot of irrational exuberance on the Democratic side of the aisle right now, because there was despair for some period of time about what November was gonna look like.”

Despite the tightening race, Axelrod reaffirmed Trump’s edge over Harris, particularly in pivotal battleground states where the margin is narrow and victory could swing either way.

The support from Alpha Kappa Alpha and the broader Divine Nine coalition underscores the significance of Harris’s bid for the presidency, capturing the attention of a diverse array of voters across the nation. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Harris remains a formidable contender, navigating the complexities of a demanding and competitive electoral race with determination and resilience.
