Manchin thinking about becoming a Democrat to run for president

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin is considering a return to the Democratic Party as he contemplates a presidential run. Earlier on Sunday, Manchin made headlines by calling on President Biden to step aside.

Senator Manchin has been in the spotlight recently for his decision to switch his party affiliation from Democrat to Independent. Despite this change, he continues to caucus with the Democrats in the Senate.

In the aftermath of Biden’s lackluster debate performance against former President Trump, Manchin expressed concerns about the President’s re-election prospects. He emphasized the need for Biden to evaluate his standing and make a decision about his political future, especially considering the impact on Democratic colleagues facing tough races in the upcoming elections.

President Biden subsequently announced that he would not seek another term in the White House, leading to speculation about potential successors within the Democratic Party. Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as a possible candidate following Biden’s announcement.

Manchin’s decision to switch from Democrat to Independent in May raised eyebrows, particularly as rumors circulated about his potential candidacy for governor of West Virginia. Moderate Republicans reportedly urged Manchin to run for governor, dissatisfied with the party’s nominee, state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

Despite downplaying these rumors, Manchin did not rule out the possibility of a gubernatorial run. He maintained that the Democratic nominee, Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, is a personal friend.

Reports suggest that at least 20 Republicans with financial resources have encouraged Manchin to enter the gubernatorial race. This pressure intensified during an event at the Greenbrier resort, owned by West Virginia’s current governor, Jim Justice.

As the political landscape evolves, Senator Manchin’s potential return to the Democratic Party and presidential ambitions add a new dimension to the upcoming elections. His influence and decision-making will undoubtedly shape the course of West Virginia politics in the coming months.
