Member of group defends phrase interpreted as calling for elimination of Jews
Embattled Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a member of the far-left “Squad,” has recently found himself in hot water after defending a phrase that has been widely condemned as antisemitic. The phrase in question calls for the “extermination” of Jews, and Bowman has faced backlash for his remarks.
In a recent debate against his opponent, Westchester County Executive George Latimer, Bowman was asked about his views on the phrase “from the river to the sea.” Bowman’s response was controversial, with him stating, “I know some do, others don’t. I do not.” This response sparked further debate and criticism.
Latimer, Bowman’s opponent, condemned Bowman’s stance on the phrase, arguing that it constitutes hate speech. He pointed out that “from the river to the sea” has often been interpreted as a call for the eradication of the Jewish population from the land of Israel.
According to the American Jewish Committee and other Jewish advocacy groups, the phrase “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free” is considered a rallying cry for terrorist groups and their sympathizers. The Anti-Defamation League has labeled it as an antisemitic slogan commonly used in anti-Israel campaigns and demonstrations.
This controversy comes amidst a larger context of heightened tensions between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Bowman has been a vocal critic of Israel, particularly since the recent conflict with Hamas began. He attended a fundraiser where Nihad Awad, a controversial and antisemitic figure, was present. Awad, the national executive director and co-founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, faced backlash last year for his comments regarding Israel’s right to self-defense.
Despite the controversy surrounding Bowman, little polling has been done on the race between him and Latimer. However, it’s worth noting that Latimer holds a slight fundraising advantage over Bowman. The primary is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25, and the winner is anticipated to secure victory in the November general election.
As the debate rages on, it remains to be seen how Bowman’s controversial remarks will impact his political future. The race in New York’s 16th Congressional District is heating up, and all eyes are on the candidates as they vie for support from voters.
