Members of “The Squad” support Kamala Harris for president

After President Biden’s announcement of dropping out of the 2024 presidential race, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar endorsed Kamala Harris for president, marking a significant shift in support within the Democratic Party.

Omar took to social media to express her gratitude to Mr. Biden for his service in the last three-and-a-half years as president. She stated, “This was the president’s decision to make and I’m grateful for his years of service to our country.” Omar further added, “I’m thrilled to support Kamala Harris as our Democratic nominee and remain committed to working alongside her to defeat Donald Trump in November.”

Despite calls for Mr. Biden to resign from the race following a heated debate last month, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also endorsed Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee. Ocasio-Cortez, who had previously questioned the feasibility of replacing Biden this late in the election cycle, pledged her full support to ensure Harris’s victory in November. In a social media post, she confidently declared, “Kamala Harris will be the next President of the United States.”

Another member of The Squad, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, joined in endorsing Harris. Pressley, who had criticized the Democratic Party’s attempts to oust Biden, expressed her support for Harris’s candidacy. At the same time, Rep. Rashida Tlaib has not publicly commented on Mr. Biden’s decision to withdraw from the election.

Tlaib, the only Palestinian member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has been a vocal critic of Mr. Biden’s handling of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. She had urged people to vote against him in Michigan’s primary and faced censure last fall for her remarks. In solidarity, Ilhan Omar defended Tlaib in a speech and accused those who voted in favor of her censure of ignoring the plight of Palestinians in Gaza.

The Squad, comprising progressive left-wing Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives, includes Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley, and Tlaib. This informal group has been instrumental in shaping the narrative around progressive policies and advocating for social justice issues within the Democratic Party.

As the endorsement of Kamala Harris gains momentum within The Squad, it reflects a strategic move to consolidate support behind the Democratic nominee and present a unified front against President Trump in the upcoming election. With the backing of influential progressive voices like Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ayanna Pressley, Harris’s campaign is poised to gain significant traction in the months leading up to the election.
