Merchan postpones Trump’s sentencing hearing in New York until September.

Former President Donald Trump’s sentencing in the New York v. Trump case has been delayed by Judge Juan Merchan until September. The delay follows Trump’s request, with no opposition from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Trump was found guilty last month on all counts of falsifying business records in the first degree after a six-week trial stemming from Bragg’s investigation.

Trump sought to overturn his conviction following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling granting former presidents substantial immunity for official acts. He also requested a delay in his sentencing, which was originally scheduled for July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to be formally nominated as the 2024 GOP presidential candidate.

In response, Bragg stated that while Trump’s appeal lacked merit, he did not oppose the request to delay sentencing.

Judge Merchan subsequently postponed the sentencing to September 18 at 10:00 a.m., vacating the original July 11 date.

Merchan’s decision comes in the wake of a 6-3 Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, which emanated from charges against Trump in a separate federal case related to the Capitol breach on January 6 and alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Trump’s legal team promptly moved to apply the new immunity standard to the Manhattan case as well.
