Michael Cohen will speak in Trump trial next Monday.
Michael Cohen, the former personal lawyer to ex-President Donald Trump, is set to take the stand as a star witness for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team. Cohen’s involvement in arranging a $130,000 payment to adult actress Stormy Daniels in 2016 to allegedly keep quiet about her reported sexual encounter with Trump in the early 2000s forms the crux of the case.
Trump, in response, reportedly made subsequent payments of $35,000 to Cohen, who served as his personal attorney at the time. Despite Trump’s denial of the encounter, these payments are now the basis for Bragg’s indictment of Trump on falsifying business records charges, as Bragg aims to prove that the payments were reimbursements for the initial payment to Daniels.
The defense attorneys for Trump maintain that the $35,000 payments were legitimate legal transactions and not paybacks. Trump, facing 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Michael Cohen, who previously pled guilty in 2018 to campaign finance violations, making false statements to Congress, and tax evasion, has already been handed a three-year prison sentence. The former president has consistently labeled Cohen a “proven liar” in response to his testimonies and actions.
In a recent twist, Hope Hicks, former press secretary for the 2016 Trump campaign and White House communications director, testified about Cohen’s self-proclaimed moniker “Mr. Fix It.” However, she clarified that Cohen earned this title not for fixing things but for breaking them in the first place, causing frustration among campaign staff and executing unhelpful tasks.
The ongoing trial of the ex-president and presumptive GOP nominee for the 2024 election has now entered its fifteenth day of witness testimony. The testimony from Cohen is expected to shed more light on the intricate details of the case and provide crucial insights into the alleged wrongdoings of the former president.
