Michelle Obama is ahead of Trump in latest poll.

Former first lady Michelle Obama is emerging as a potential frontrunner to challenge former President Trump in the 2024 election, according to a recent poll conducted following the latest presidential debate.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll asked respondents who they would like to see face off against Trump in the general election, amidst growing calls to replace the current Democratic nominee. President Biden was surpassed by both the former first lady and his own vice president in the poll results.

When participants were questioned about their preferred candidate in a race against Trump, Michelle Obama was the only Democrat who garnered enough support to defeat the former president on the general election ballot.

In this hypothetical scenario, the former first lady led Trump by 11 percentage points, with 50% of the vote compared to the former president’s 39%.

The outcome of the poll positioning Michelle Obama as a leading contender in the Democratic candidate pool comes on the heels of a report by The Washington Post, stating that former President Obama has expressed to supporters that Biden’s path to re-election has become more challenging in recent times.

Vice President Harris has also seen an increase in popularity as a potential Democratic nominee alternative, although she did not amass enough backing to surpass Trump in the most recent survey.

According to the poll, approximately 42% of respondents indicated they would vote for Harris, while a slight majority of 43% of registered voters favored Trump.

Despite being the party’s current nominee, various post-debate polls have indicated a decline in support for Biden as a potential candidate to represent the Democratic Party in 2024, citing concerns over his age and mental acuity.

In the survey, Biden and Trump were tied with both receiving 40% of the vote. However, the notable distinction lies in the fact that more voters expressed a preference for a different candidate or stated they would abstain from voting altogether if Biden were to be the nominee in any other matchup.

Other potential Democratic nominee replacements were also featured in the poll, such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who garnered 39% support compared to 42% in favor of Trump.

The poll, conducted shortly after the first presidential debate, indicated that 56% of registered voters believe Biden should withdraw from the race.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey took place from July 1-2, with a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
