Mitt Romney criticizes Bragg’s decision in Trump case as “malpractice”
Senator Mitt Romney of Utah recently voiced his disapproval of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s decision to pursue charges against former President Donald Trump. Romney accused Bragg of engaging in “political malpractice” and criticized Democrats over the outcome of the case.
Romney warned that while Bragg may have won the battle for now, he may have ultimately lost the political war. He described the Democrats’ attempt to extinguish the “Trump fire” as political malpractice.
The guilty verdict against Trump was handed down by a New York jury on Thursday. The charges included falsifying business records to conceal payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who alleged an affair with Trump. Trump denied the affair and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In response to the verdict, Romney, known for his moderate stance within the Republican Party, aligned himself with senators like Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins. Murkowski also lamented Trump’s legal troubles, diverting attention from President Biden’s shortcomings.
On the other hand, right-wing members of the Republican conference strongly reacted to the guilty verdict. Senators, led by Mike Lee, expressed their intent to obstruct Democratic legislative efforts in the future.
Despite the verdict, Trump has vowed to appeal the decision. Romney, on the other hand, criticized Biden for not issuing a pardon to his political rival. He argued that granting Trump a pardon would have elevated Biden’s stature and portrayed Trump in a diminished light.
With tensions running high in the aftermath of the verdict, it remains to be seen how the political landscape will be impacted by Trump’s legal troubles and potential appeals.
