Jonathan Keller, the council’s president, argued that parents have a sacred duty to guide and protect their children, and the law could undermine this foundational role.
Even prominent figures such as Elon Musk have weighed in on the issue. Musk announced plans to relocate the headquarters of SpaceX and the social media platform X from California to Texas as a response to the new law. He cited concerns about the impact of the legislation on families and businesses, emphasizing the need for a more supportive environment.
The legislation was prompted by the introduction of policies in some California school districts that required parental notification if a student sought to change their gender identification. This sparked a debate among state officials, with Democratic representatives advocating for student privacy rights. Governor Newsom’s spokesperson, Brandon Richards, highlighted that the new law aims to protect children while respecting the pivotal role of parents in their children’s lives.
In addition to prohibiting parental notification regarding gender identity changes, AB 1955 also mandates the development of resources by the state Department of Education for families of LGBTQ+ students in grades 7 through high school.
