NYC mayor suggests changes to Harris border strategy after talking with her team.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed on Tuesday that his office has been in discussion with Vice President Kamala Harris’ team regarding an upcoming plan to address the ongoing border crisis, which has been a pressing issue in the current political landscape.
Following President Biden’s announcement that he would not seek re-election and his endorsement of Harris as his potential successor, Adams, who has been facing a significant influx of migrants into the sanctuary city, disclosed that there have been “indirect” conversations with Harris’ team about her forthcoming strategy.
Speaking on the matter, Adams stated, “We’ve had indirect conversations with her team, and I believe she’s going to roll out her plan on what she wants to do around this border crisis.”
The issue of immigration and the persistent crisis at the southern border are likely to remain paramount concerns among voters in the upcoming months, with both Democrats and Republicans grappling to address the root causes and implications of mass migration.
Harris was assigned by President Biden in 2021 to spearhead diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the underlying reasons for migration from the Northern Triangle countries. Despite her instrumental role in this initiative, she has faced criticism, particularly from Republicans who have dubbed her as the “border czar,” a title that the White House has refuted.
The Biden administration has attributed blame for the crisis to congressional Republicans for failing to approve necessary funding and reforms to overhaul what they perceive as a flawed immigration system.
Recent executive actions by President Biden, including an order to restrict entries into the U.S., have purportedly led to a decrease in overall encounters by over 50% and a 70% decrease in releases. Additionally, the administration claims to have repatriated more than 50,000 individuals to over 100 countries as part of their efforts to address the crisis.
While acknowledging the progress made, administration officials emphasize that sustainable solutions and adequate resources to secure the border can only be achieved through legislative action by Congress.
Despite the administration’s efforts, Republicans remain critical of what they perceive as a lenient border policy and have sought to associate Harris with the administration’s handling of the crisis. A recent memo from the National Republican Senatorial Campaign urged candidates to vigorously link their opponents to what they described as Harris’ “extreme agenda.”
Amidst the ongoing debate, Mayor Adams has echoed calls for federal intervention and increased funding for states and cities that are bearing the brunt of the migrant influx. He advocated for the revival of a bipartisan Senate proposal introduced earlier in the year and commended recent executive actions taken by President Biden.
Furthermore, Adams put forth his own proposals to tackle the crisis, including the appointment of a “decompression czar” to manage the relocation of migrants to specific destinations based on population and employment needs.
