Oakland mayor speaks out after FBI raid.

Mayor Sheng Thao, of Oakland, made her first public remarks following a federal raid on her home, asserting her innocence and stating, “I have done nothing wrong.” Thao, reading from prepared remarks, expressed confidence that she will not face charges as she maintains her innocence in the ongoing investigation. The raid, which involved FBI agents seizing boxes from her residence, took place shortly after backers of a mayoral recall campaign qualified for the ballot, leading Thao to question the timing of the event.

Thao criticized the recall effort, labeling it a waste of time and resources fueled by a few wealthy individuals from neighboring areas who are determined to remove her from office. The mayor raised concerns about the motives behind the raid, especially coming on the heels of the recall election qualification. Critics of Thao’s administration claim a decline in public safety and economic progress under her leadership and were particularly critical of her decision to dismiss the Police Chief.

During the raid, Thao and her son were present at their home, prioritizing their safety amidst the unfolding events. Federal agents also searched properties connected to the Duong family, known for their political influence in the city. Cal Waste Solutions, a recycling company owned by the Duongs, had previously come under scrutiny for its campaign contributions to Thao and other local officials.

Prior to stepping down, Thao’s attorney emphasized that the Mayor was not the focal point of the investigation and vowed her full cooperation with federal authorities. However, the attorney resigned following Mayor Thao’s unannounced press conference, showcasing a rift in their legal representation strategy.

Mayor Sheng Thao, a 38-year-old of Hmong heritage, shared a touching testament to her family’s immigrant background, highlighting her journey from humble beginnings to becoming Oakland’s mayor. Despite the challenges she faces, Thao remains steadfast in her commitment to serve her community and uphold her innocence in the face of ongoing investigations.
