Ocasio-Cortez tells Democrats to pick new direction at noisy DNC speech
During the prime-time Democratic National Convention, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York delivered a passionate speech on Monday night, urging the nation to elect Vice President Kamala Harris to fulfill an ambitious agenda for the people. “We choose a new path, and open the door to a new day, one that is for the people and by the people,” she declared.
This marked a significant departure from her brief introduction of Sen. Bernie Sanders at the 2020 DNC, as Ocasio-Cortez was given a prominent speaking slot on the first night of this year’s DNC. Reflecting on her own working-class background, having been elected in 2018, she highlighted the attacks by Republicans who suggested she should “go back to bartending.”
“Ever since I got elected, Republicans have attacked me by saying I should go back to bartending,” she retorted. “But let me tell you, I’m happy to, any day of the week, because there is nothing wrong with working for a living. Imagine having leaders in the White House who understand that, leaders like Kamala and Tim.”
Ocasio-Cortez praised Harris for understanding the struggles faced by Americans when it comes to rent, groceries, and prescriptions. “I am here tonight because America has before us a rare and precious opportunity,” she continued. “In Kamala Harris, we have a chance to elect a president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class.”
In addition to championing Harris, Ocasio-Cortez took jabs at former President Donald Trump, criticizing him as a “two-bit union buster” who prioritized personal gain over the well-being of the nation. She asserted, “The truth is Don, you cannot love your country if you only fight for the wealthy and big business.” Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the importance of fighting for working people, including bartenders, factory workers, and fast-food cashiers.
Amidst the applause and support for Harris, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the Vice President’s efforts in securing a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitating the return of hostages. This showcased Harris’ dedication to diplomacy and humanitarian causes.
Overall, Ocasio-Cortez’s speech at the DNC resonated with a message of unity, hope, and progress. As she endorsed Harris for president, she painted a picture of a government that prioritizes the needs of all Americans, particularly those in working-class professions. Her words echoed a call for change and a vision of a brighter future under the leadership of Harris.
