Oprah says to choose common sense in DNC speech
Oprah Winfrey delivered a powerful speech at the Democratic convention, emphasizing unity and taking subtle jabs at former President Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. JD Vance. She highlighted the importance of standing together as a nation and not succumbing to division. Winfrey eloquently expressed that we are not so different from our neighbors and that in times of crisis, we come together to help each other without prejudices or biases.
Referencing Vance’s controversial comments about women who have cats and not children, Winfrey humorously mentioned saving even the cat of a childless homeowner from a fire. She criticized the spread of misinformation and ridiculed Trump’s claims that Christians wouldn’t have to vote again if they voted for him in November.
Winfrey, a registered independent, proudly advocated for voting multiple times to fulfill our civic duty as Americans. She urged independents and undecided voters to support Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, emphasizing the importance of values, character, decency, and respect in leadership.
During her speech, Winfrey appealed to the audience to prioritize loyalty to the Constitution over blind loyalty to any individual. She championed optimism, inclusion, common sense, and freedom as quintessential American values. She firmly believed that Harris and Walz embody these values and can steer the country in the right direction.
In a post-speech interview, Winfrey expressed her deep love and concern for the country, emphasizing that her success was only possible in America. She highlighted the gravity of the current political climate and the critical choices facing the nation.
Having refrained from endorsing politicians for most of her career, Winfrey’s decision to speak out now signifies the importance of the upcoming election. Her longtime friend, Gayle King, noted that Winfrey typically avoids politics but felt compelled to voice her opinions due to the high stakes involved.
Winfrey’s history of endorsing political candidates, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and President Biden, underscores her commitment to supporting leaders she believes in. Her recent endorsement of Harris and Walz reflects her belief in their ability to uphold American values and lead the country with integrity.
