Over 230 medical professionals urge Trump to share medical records
Former President Donald Trump is under scrutiny from over 230 healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, who are urging him to release his medical records. The group believes that transparency about his health is crucial, especially given his advancing age.
In a letter dated October 13 and obtained by CBS News, the 238 signatories expressed their concerns about Trump’s fitness for office and the signs of declining acuity they have observed. They emphasized the need for a detailed examination of his behavior to address the alarming characteristics they have witnessed.
The letter, organized by the group “Doctors for Harris,” highlights the tradition of presidential candidates disclosing their medical records, citing examples like Senator John McCain in 2008 and Trump himself during his 2020 campaign against President Biden.
Without access to comprehensive health records, the healthcare professionals rely on public appearances to draw conclusions. They note Trump’s use of rallies to express rambling, meandering, and often provocative behavior, which they find concerning.
Vice President Kamala Harris has been vocal about Trump’s lack of transparency regarding his health. She has emphasized the importance of contrasting her own medical records, which confirm her physical and mental resilience for the presidency, with Trump’s undisclosed information.
Responding to Harris’ calls, Trump’s campaign released statements from his personal physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, attesting to his excellent health without providing specific details. At 78 years old, Trump would become the oldest president if re-elected, raising concerns about his ability to handle the demands of the presidency.
Mark Lopatin, a retired rheumatologist and signatory of the letter, questioned Trump’s readiness for the rigorous responsibilities of the presidency. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, especially for a candidate vying for one of the most stressful jobs in the world.
In a recent exchange, Trump challenged Harris to undergo a cognitive test, raising doubts about her mental acuity. Harris’ physician reiterated her excellent health status in response to Trump’s insinuations. Trump had previously mentioned his willingness to share medical records and cognitive test results but has not followed through.
Public opinion on the candidates’ mental and cognitive health has shifted over the course of the campaign. While doubts were initially raised about Biden before his withdrawal, Harris now enjoys higher confidence among voters in her ability to serve as president.
A CBS News poll in September across key states revealed that a majority of voters viewed Harris as mentally and cognitively fit for the presidency compared to Trump. This disparity underscores the significance of health transparency and its impact on voter perceptions.
