Phoenix Police Found to Use Too Much Force, Discriminate Against Minorities
The Justice Department has unveiled disturbing findings about the Phoenix Police Department, revealing a pattern of unconstitutional behavior that infringes on the rights of Black, Hispanic, and Native American individuals. According to a comprehensive investigation, Phoenix law enforcement has been using excessive force, discriminating against marginalized communities, and mishandling interactions with individuals experiencing homelessness and behavioral health disabilities.
Attorney General Merrick Garland condemned the department’s actions, stating that there is reasonable cause to believe that the City of Phoenix and its police force are violating federal law and the Constitution. The release of these findings marks a crucial step towards ensuring accountability and transparency within the police department while striving to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the community.
The investigation, which began in August 2021, utilized interviews, police interactions, thousands of documents, and hours of body-worn camera footage to compile evidence of misconduct. The report highlighted instances of unjustified deadly force, delayed medical assistance, and infringement on the civil rights of individuals engaging in protected First Amendment activities such as protests and demonstrations.
In response to the findings, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized the need for immediate action, urging the City of Phoenix and the police department to engage in negotiations for a court-enforceable settlement with independent monitoring. This collaborative effort is crucial in implementing meaningful reform to protect the rights and safety of all Phoenix residents.
Michael Sullivan, the interim police chief for the Phoenix Police Department, expressed the department’s commitment to addressing these issues and working towards improving community relations. Moving forward, it is essential for the city and law enforcement to prioritize reform efforts that uphold the principles of justice, equality, and accountability.
