Poll shows Harris’ popularity increases after Biden exits race.

Vice President Kamala Harris has experienced a significant boost in favorability among American voters following President Biden’s decision to step down from the 2024 race, a recent poll reveals.

In the aftermath of Biden’s withdrawal, Harris’ overall favorability surged from 35% to 43%, while her unfavorability rating dropped from 46% to 42%, according to the results of an ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted on Friday and Saturday.

Just a week after Biden’s announcement, Harris garnered widespread support from Democrats and essentially secured the nomination by the middle of the following week.

The news of Harris becoming the party’s nominee sparked excitement among Democrats, leading to record-breaking fundraising for her campaign. This surge of enthusiasm was mirrored in the poll results.

Of the Democrats surveyed, 88% expressed enthusiasm about Harris (63% very and 25% somewhat) as the party’s nominee. This level of enthusiasm surpassed that of former President Trump among Republicans, with only 82% of GOP respondents indicating excitement about him being the nominee.

Interestingly, Trump’s favorability rating saw a decrease in the poll, dropping from 40% to 36% compared to the previous week. Additionally, his unfavorable rating slightly increased from 51% to 52% in the latest poll.

The survey also delved into the ongoing speculation surrounding Harris’ choice for a running mate. Despite having not made a selection yet, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (54%) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (54%) had the highest name recognition among respondents.

However, candidates like Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., (22% favorable) and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (17% favorable) earned the highest favorability ratings among respondents who were familiar with them.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll was carried out from July 26-27, surveying 1,200 U.S. adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
