President Biden to headline Day 1 of DNC

President Biden’s upcoming address at the Democratic convention is set to take place with many members of his party feeling optimistic about his presidency. The general sentiment among Democrats nationwide towards Mr. Biden’s presidency has seen a positive shift since March, with three out of four individuals describing his time in office as “excellent” or “good.”

However, this favorable view does not resonate as strongly with the overall voter population, including a majority of independents and Republicans, who tend to view his presidency in a more negative light, categorizing it as “fair” or “poor.”

So, how does this perception of the Biden administration impact Vice President Kamala Harris?

Unsurprisingly, those likely voters who hold a positive view of President Biden’s presidency are overwhelmingly in favor of supporting Vice President Harris. On the other hand, individuals who believe that President Biden’s performance has been subpar are more inclined to back former President Donald Trump.

However, a significant portion of voters fall into the category of rating President Biden’s administration as “fair.” These voters are primarily made up of independents and disenchanted Democrats, and interestingly, the majority of them are throwing their support behind Harris, even if they don’t harbor overwhelmingly positive feelings towards President Biden.

This analysis stems from a recent CBS News/YouGov survey where 3,258 registered voters nationwide were interviewed between August 14-16, 2024. The survey sample was carefully weighted based on gender, age, race, education, and past voting behavior to ensure it was representative of the voter population. The margin of error for registered voters stands at ±2.1 points.

The battleground states identified in the survey include Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, which are crucial in determining the outcome of the upcoming election.
