Rep. Adam Smith says Biden should step down.
Congressman Adam Smith, who represents Washington and was among the first House Democrats to call on President Biden to exit the presidential race after his dismal debate, recently shared his thoughts on why the president should step down. In an interview with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett on “The Takeout” podcast, Smith expressed his belief that it was time for President Biden to gracefully bow out of the race.
Reflecting on the president’s performance in the debate, Smith emphasized, “When Joe Biden walked off that debate stage two weeks ago, there was only one thing to do, and that was for his team to say, ‘We’re done’.” This sentiment was echoed by at least 13 House Democrats who have also publicly opposed Mr. Biden’s reelection bid. Smith even anticipates that more Democrats will join this movement, possibly totaling around 20 dissenting voices.
Despite acknowledging that President Biden has a strong platform to run on, Smith raised concerns about the president’s ability to effectively communicate his message. He suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris should take over as the Democratic nominee, with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as her running mate. Smith emphasized the importance of providing the country with a fresh and different candidate, something that voters have been yearning for throughout the campaign.
However, in the event that President Biden decides to remain in the race, Congressman Smith assured that he would continue to offer his full support. He praised Mr. Biden as the best candidate in the current field, highlighting his experience and capabilities. Despite his admiration for the president as one of the best first-term presidents, Smith expressed concerns about the potential damage to Mr. Biden’s legacy if he were to face defeat in the upcoming election.
“You have an incredible legacy. Don’t screw it up,” Smith advised President Biden. “It’s unfair and it’s unforgiving, but if you run and you make a mistake and misjudge how strong you are to get into this campaign, you’re jeopardizing your legacy and your care for this country.”
As Congressman Adam Smith continues to advocate for a change in leadership within the Democratic Party, his insights serve as a reminder of the complexities and challenges of the presidential race. Whether President Biden heeds these calls for withdrawal or remains steadfast in his pursuit of reelection, the future of the campaign remains uncertain.
