Rep Jordan wants Congress to stop funding legal attacks on Trump.

Under the shadow of former President Donald Trump’s recent legal troubles, Republicans are already looking ahead to the next steps in the legal battle that continues to unfold. The House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan, is preparing for the upcoming fiscal year 2025 appropriations process with a strong focus on protecting fundamental freedoms and combating what they view as politically motivated prosecutions.

Following the conviction of Trump on all 34 counts of falsifying business records, Republicans are gearing up to ensure that federal funding is not used to support what they refer to as “politicized prosecutions” by state or federal prosecutors. Jordan has been vocal about his concerns regarding the rise of what he calls “abusive ‘lawfare’ tactics” aimed at targeting political opponents.

One key aspect of Jordan’s proposal is the inclusion of language in the fiscal year 2025 appropriations package that would eliminate federal funding for prosecutors engaged in what he considers to be politically motivated prosecutions. This move aims to prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to support what Republicans view as unfair or biased legal actions.

In addition, Jordan has put forward specific bills, such as the “No More Political Prosecutions Act” and the “Forfeiture Funds Expenditure Transparency Act,” which are designed to address and prevent politicized prosecutions at both the state and federal levels.

One of the key figures in Trump’s legal saga is District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who played a significant role in bringing charges against the former president in New York. Republicans are closely scrutinizing Bragg’s handling of the case, as well as the actions of other prosecutors, such as Jack Smith in the Jan. 6 investigation and Fani Willis in the Georgia election interference probe.

While Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges arising from these investigations, the House Judiciary Committee is moving forward with plans to defund what they perceive as politically motivated legal actions. Jordan’s proposal also includes measures to address alleged abuses within federal law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, and to prohibit funding for agencies engaged in what Republicans view as unconstitutional censorship or suppression of speech.

On the immigration front, Jordan is calling for restrictions on taxpayer funding for policies related to open-border immigration, as well as efforts to safeguard freedom of speech online by prohibiting government censorship of online speech. The proposal also seeks to ensure that federal grant dollars are not awarded to jurisdictions that choose to defund their police, in an effort to combat rising crime rates in urban areas.

As Republicans gear up for the fiscal year 2025 appropriations process, Jordan remains steadfast in his commitment to protecting Americans’ fundamental freedoms and preventing what he sees as the weaponization of the federal government for political purposes. By working together, Jordan believes that the appropriations process can serve as a powerful check against abuses of power and ensure that taxpayer dollars are used in a fair and transparent manner.
