Rep. Seth Moulton Joins Democrats Urging Joe Biden to Drop Out of Race

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) has made a bold statement, calling for President Joe Biden to not seek reelection. This declaration marks him as the third elected Democrat to advocate for Biden stepping aside.

In an interview with Boston radio station WBUR, Moulton urged Biden to emulate George Washington, one of our founding fathers, and give room for new leaders to emerge and challenge Donald Trump.

Moulton’s stance resonates with that of Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who have also voiced their belief that Biden should not continue in the presidential race.

Their calls for a new candidate arose following Biden’s lackluster performance in a recent debate. Critics noted his moments of confusion, muddled responses, and lapses in coherence, further highlighting his age as a factor. At 81, Biden holds the title of the oldest president in U.S. history.

While it is acknowledged that President Trump was not exempt from falsehoods during the debate, his delivery stood out as more robust. Despite being 78 years old, Trump’s vigor posed a stark contrast to the perception of Biden’s capabilities.

Amidst the debate aftermath, other Democrats have come close to joining Moulton, Doggett, and Grijalva in their sentiments. Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) pointed out lingering concerns raised by the debate that she believes merit serious consideration.

Speculation regarding Biden’s condition during the debate varied. The White House attributed his performance to a cold, yet Biden himself cited fatigue from recent international trips as the primary factor. In a conversation with Democratic governors, Biden disclosed his need for additional rest and reduced nighttime work.

Addressing the issue of cognitive clarity, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) proposed that Biden engage in multiple interviews with journalists to improve public confidence in his mental acuity. As a step in this direction, Biden will be featured in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, scheduled to air on Friday.

Reports suggest that there is a possibility for more Democrats to align with the call for Biden to step down. Draft letters advocating for this course of action are purportedly circulating among House lawmakers.

Prior to his definitive statement, Moulton expressed apprehensions about Biden’s candidacy. Citing concerns about the status quo potentially leading to another term for President Trump, Moulton emphasized the need for strategic changes and acknowledged the inevitability of Biden’s aging process.

As discussions surrounding Biden’s political future intensify, the Democratic Party faces a critical juncture. The voices calling for new leadership challenge the conventional norms of party loyalty and aim to prioritize effectiveness and electability in the upcoming presidential race.
