RFK Jr. claims Biden damaged his reputation and career by holding onto power.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, has made a bold statement accusing President Biden of tarnishing his legacy by staying in the race for reelection. In an interview with CBS News, Kennedy compared Biden’s actions to those of former President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021. Kennedy, who has known Biden for 40 years, expressed his disappointment in Biden’s refusal to let go of power, stating that it has damaged his reputation built over 50 years of service to the country.
During the interview with CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent, Major Garrett, Kennedy drew parallels between Trump’s unwillingness to relinquish power and Biden’s decision to stay in the race despite mounting pressure to withdraw. Kennedy emphasized the importance of leaders gracefully stepping down when the time comes, a tradition he believes both Trump and Biden failed to uphold.
Following concerns raised within his own party about his age and ability to handle another term, President Biden, 81, announced his decision to withdraw from the race. In an Oval Office address, Biden acknowledged the need to “pass the torch” to a new generation of leaders, prioritizing the preservation of democracy over personal ambition.
Kennedy, whose chances of winning the presidency as an independent candidate are slim, has been working to gain ballot access nationwide. He has expressed confidence in his ability to secure victory if Biden were to exit the race. Recently, a video surfaced on social media showing Kennedy on the phone with Trump, who attempted to persuade him to end his campaign and endorse him.
Amid increased scrutiny and security concerns, Kennedy was granted Secret Service protection following an assassination attempt against Trump. CBS News will air more of Major Garrett’s interview with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on “CBS Mornings” and “CBS Evening News.” Additionally, the interview will be featured on “The Takeout” podcast.
