RFK Jr. tells Biden: I’m not ruining things, you are.
Brooklyn – Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. called a press conference in downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday, teasing a “major announcement” from his campaign.
The speculation ran wild – would there be an endorsement? A new policy rollout, perhaps? Or maybe an update on ballot access in New York?
But Kennedy had a different plan in mind. Instead of any of those anticipated announcements, he unveiled a bold strategy aimed at goading President Joe Biden, who currently holds a substantial lead over Kennedy in national polls, to bow out of the presidential race.
Many prominent Democrats have warned that Kennedy’s candidacy could play the role of a “spoiler,” diverting support away from viable contenders and ultimately aiding in securing a re-election for Donald Trump. In response to these concerns, Kennedy and his campaign manager Amaryllis Fox Kennedy issued a challenge to Biden – a “no spoiler” pledge.
The proposed pledge involved conducting a nationwide poll of 30,000 individuals across all 50 states in October. The poll would examine a hypothetical head-to-head matchup between Kennedy and Trump, as well as between Biden and Trump. The candidate who fares better in this poll, with no option for a third candidate, would commit to exiting the race.
Confident in the results of their own internal polling, which involved over 26,000 voters across all 50 states and was conducted by Zogby Strategies, Kennedy’s team believes he would emerge victorious in such a scenario. Their data suggests that while Trump outperforms Biden in a hypothetical match-up, Kennedy narrowly edges out Trump.
Challenging Biden directly, Amaryllis Fox Kennedy asked, “Will President Biden listen to the warnings from the Democratic National Committee and step aside to allow Bobby to take on Trump in order to safeguard democracy? Or will he stubbornly hand the reins back to Donald Trump?”
While the DNC has labeled Kennedy a spoiler, they have not explicitly demanded his withdrawal. Kennedy emphasized that he extended the challenge to Biden because his polling data indicates Trump’s strong position in the race, making him an unlikely spoiler candidate.
In a surprising move, Kennedy expressed his willingness to make the same pledge with President Trump, emphasizing the need for a two-way race free from fear-based voting decisions.
The crux of Kennedy’s proposal lies in the belief that existing public polls are insufficient in capturing his true level of support. Most polls do not include head-to-head matchups between Kennedy and either of his opponents. Kennedy cited a TMZ poll as one of the few examples that met his criteria.
However, the absence of adequate two-way race polling stems from the reluctance of either Biden or Trump to drop out, despite mounting pressures. Legal challenges attempting to remove Trump from the ballot due to pending criminal cases have faced resistance in the courts.
As of Wednesday, Trump leads Biden nationally by a narrow margin, with Kennedy polling at 10.3% in the average of public surveys on FiveThirtyEight.
Kennedy’s unconventional blend of anti-establishment rhetoric, vaccine skepticism, environmental advocacy, and opposition to U.S. involvement in Ukraine has resonated with a diverse group of disenfranchised voters. The impact of his candidacy on either major party remains uncertain, but both sides are growing increasingly wary of his presence in the race.
Democrats point to significant contributions from Republican donors to Kennedy’s super PAC as evidence of his potential ties to the GOP and Trump’s supporters.
On the other hand, Republicans are focusing on Kennedy’s past liberal stances and controversial remarks, contrasting them with his current status as a hero among conservative circles due to his stance on COVID-19 measures.
Amidst these tensions, the prospect of a showdown between Kennedy, Biden, and Trump looms large, with each candidate vying for support in a fiercely competitive race.
