Robert De Niro is featured in ads for Biden before the debate.

The Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro has taken on a new role as the narrator of a campaign advertisement for President Joe Biden. This ad is just the beginning of a series of high-quality TV and digital spots leading up to Biden’s first debate with former President Donald Trump in Atlanta on June 27.

In this 30-second video ad, De Niro, a known Democrat and fierce critic of Trump, highlights examples of erratic and authoritarian behavior displayed by Trump during his presidency, depicting him as “out of control.”

De Niro points out Trump’s refusal to concede the 2020 election and argues that his behavior only worsened after losing to Biden. He emphasizes the threats to American democracy that could arise from a second term for Trump. The renowned star of films such as “The Godfather Part II” and “Raging Bull” warns viewers of the consequences of Trump’s actions post-election.

“Now he’s running again – this time, threatening to be a dictator, to terminate the Constitution,” De Niro says, followed by a clip of Trump warning of a “bloodbath” if he loses. De Niro suggests that Trump is seeking revenge and will stop at nothing to achieve it.

While it is true that Trump did mention a “bloodbath” in his remarks, the advertisement takes his words out of context. Trump was specifically referring to the potential negative impact of his defeat on the U.S. automotive industry.

This powerful ad featuring De Niro, released on Friday, is part of a larger effort by the Biden campaign to convey the importance of the upcoming election to key voters who may not have been closely following the race.

Although the campaign has not disclosed the exact amount of money allocated to individual ads, this video is part of a $14 million campaign this month in the pivotal battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Leading up to the first debate, the Biden campaign will focus on three main themes, as outlined in a memo from campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon. These themes include Trump’s record on abortion rights, his attacks on democracy and promotion of political violence, and his economic policies that favor the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

O’Malley Dillon has highlighted two significant dates for driving home these themes – the tenth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting on June 12 and the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Dobbs v. Wade on June 24.

The upcoming debates between Biden and Trump will be pivotal, with CNN set to host the Atlanta debate on June 27 and ABC News hosting the second debate on Sept. 10, the location of which is yet to be announced.

These debates mark the earliest general-election presidential debates since televised debates became a tradition in 1960. Biden is determined to challenge Trump before early voting starts in late September, as he currently trails Trump among registered voters in all six battleground states.
