Rumble CEO to talk about censorship requests from different countries on free speech.
Rumble, the popular video-sharing and cloud service platform, has recently disclosed a series of censorship demands from various governments that may come as a surprise to many. The CEO of Rumble, Pavlovski, is set to address the House Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations to emphasize the importance of freedom of speech and expression in a democratic society.
Highlighting the significance of freedom of expression as enshrined in both the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Pavlovski expresses his concern over the threats posed to these fundamental rights in the year 2024.
The censorship demands faced by Rumble from certain liberal democracies, typically known for upholding personal freedoms, have been alarming. These countries attempt to regulate online content, especially if it is politically unpopular or inconvenient for the ruling government.
For instance, the French government requested Rumble to take down content posted by Russia Today, funded by the Russian government, despite no violation of Rumble’s posting policies. This demand led to a legal battle between Rumble and the French government, resulting in the temporary suspension of Rumble’s services in the country.
Similarly, in Brazil, following President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s election victory in 2022, the government tried to censor political opponents and journalists on Rumble, likened to the events of the U.S. Capitol protests in January 2021. Rumble’s services remain suspended in Brazil due to ongoing legal challenges.
Rumble has also faced pressure from the Australian and New Zealand governments to remove specific content from its platform, such as a viral video of a Sydney bishop being attacked during a church service and data released by a government whistleblower regarding the effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine. Despite these challenges, Rumble continues to challenge these governments.
Pavlovski is expected to shed light on the censorship attempts by France, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil in his congressional testimony, emphasizing the overt nature of these governments’ actions to restrict access to certain content for their citizens.
Expressing his dismay over the evolving landscape of government censorship, Pavlovski urges the U.S. government to take a stand in defending freedom of speech. He warns that while Rumble is currently facing these demands, other platforms could be targeted in the future, jeopardizing the universal right to freedom of expression at the core of Western democracy.
