Seattle police forced to hire illegal migrants due to staffing shortage

The city of Seattle is opening its doors to DACA recipients, also known as “Dreamers,” to join the ranks of its police department in an effort to replenish its dwindling numbers.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients are individuals who entered the United States as minors without authorization and have since benefited from the DACA program, which grants them the ability to defer deportation and work legally in the country.

In a groundbreaking move, the Seattle Police Department announced that it is now accepting applications from DACA recipients, marking a significant shift in their recruitment policy. Previously, applicants were required to be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, making it challenging for DACA recipients to pursue careers in law enforcement.

The recent passage of SB 6157 by the Washington legislature paved the way for DACA recipients to apply for civil service positions within the Seattle Police Department. This legislative reform, signed by Governor Jay Inslee in March, has allowed DACA recipients to contribute to essential roles within law enforcement.

With the Seattle Police Department facing a significant shortage of officers in recent years, the inclusion of DACA recipients comes as a timely solution to help address the department’s staffing challenges. According to reports, the department has seen a loss of 725 officers over the past five years, resulting in its lowest staffing levels since the 1990s.
