Senator Tom Cotton opposes student loan forgiveness for people who are against Israel.

Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, has expressed his disapproval of the potential student loan forgiveness that might be granted to anti-Israel activists at universities across the country. He introduced The No Bailouts for Campus Criminals Act, a bill aimed at preventing individuals convicted of crimes related to their involvement in protests at institutions of higher education from receiving financial bailouts.

This legislative measure, co-sponsored by 16 other Republican senators including Tim Scott, Lindsey Graham, Marsha Blackburn, Marco Rubio, and Mitt Romney, is a response to the increasing instances of anti-Israel and antisemitic protests occurring at universities nationwide. Some of these protests have escalated into violent riots, with the New York Police Department arresting approximately 300 individuals at Columbia University and City College in New York.

President Biden’s initial plan for student loan debt forgiveness faced legal challenges, leading his administration to pursue more targeted forgiveness initiatives for specific groups. Cotton’s bill aims to make individuals convicted of crimes during protests ineligible for forgiveness, cancellation, waiver, or modification of federal student loans.

Republican Rep. Brandon Williams introduced companion legislation in the House to support Cotton’s efforts in curbing student loan forgiveness for convicted protesters. Williams emphasized that the bill ensures that no student protester convicted of criminal offenses would benefit from taxpayer-funded student loan forgiveness.

Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana joined Cotton in critiquing President Biden’s response to the protests and riots, suggesting that Biden should take stronger action to prevent disorder resulting from dissent.

In response to these criticisms, Biden acknowledged the importance of dissent in democracy but emphasized the need to prevent dissent from escalating into disorder.
