Senators from both parties denounce terrifying assassination attempt on Trump

The Senate Condemns Attempted Assassination of Former President Trump

Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso, R-Wyo., led a majority of the Senate in introducing a resolution to officially condemn the attempted assassination of former President Trump earlier this month at a rally in Pennsylvania. The resolution, if passed in the upper chamber, would condemn the attempt on Trump’s life, honor the victims who were killed and injured at the rally, and call for unity and civility in the United States.

The resolution amassed 64 co-sponsors, including Democratic Pennsylvania Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman, whose constituents were victims of the assassination attempt.

Senator Barrasso plans to request passage of the resolution through a mechanism known as a “hotline” or by unanimous consent on the Senate floor. Majorities of both the Democratic caucus and Republican conference were among the co-sponsors of the resolution.

The assassination attempt against Trump occurred during his July 13 outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was shot in the ear during the event and was rushed off-stage by the Secret Service. Rally attendee Corey Comperatore was killed by the gunman, while James “Jim” Copenhaver and David “Jake” Dutch were injured and hospitalized.

In response to the attack, Congress has committed to investigating the decisions that left the former president and rally attendees vulnerable. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following bipartisan calls for her to do so.

New texts and records obtained by the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, have revealed details about the timeline of the attack and how the shooter was able to evade suspicion. A detailed timeline included in a Beaver County emergency services after-action report showed that local police were unsure of the shooter’s whereabouts just moments before the attack.

Conclusion

The resolution introduced by Senator Barrasso and supported by a bipartisan majority represents a unified condemnation of the attempted assassination of former President Trump. As the investigation into the attack continues, lawmakers are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals involved in political events.
