Special counsel issues new charges against Trump after Supreme Court ruling.
Special counsel Jack Smith has filed a superseding indictment in the Jan. 6 election interference case against former President Donald Trump. This revised filing comes in light of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts.
The new indictment, presented to a second Washington grand jury, contains the same four charges that Trump was charged with last August. These charges include conspiracy to defraud the U.S., conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
Despite these serious allegations, Trump has maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
One noticeable change in the superseding indictment is the absence of a section from the original filing. This section accused Trump of pressuring the Justice Department to allow states to withhold their electors in the 2020 election. This controversial move led to a confrontation between Trump and then-acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, as well as other administration officials who threatened to resign if forced to comply with Trump’s demands.
Earlier this month, Smith’s legal team requested additional time from Judge Tanya Chutkan to provide a proposal for the pretrial proceedings schedule. This delay was necessary as Smith was in the process of obtaining the new superseding indictment from the grand jury.
Shortly after news of the new indictment broke, Trump took to social media to denounce Smith. In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the special counsel’s actions, calling them a desperate attempt to revive a “dead” Witch Hunt in Washington, D.C.
Trump accused Smith of bringing forth a “ridiculous” new indictment that he believes should be dismissed immediately. The former president continues to assert his innocence and vehemently deny any wrongdoing in relation to the Jan. 6 election interference case.
As the legal battle between Trump and the special counsel intensifies, the public remains divided on the implications of these latest developments. Stay tuned as this high-profile case continues to unfold, shaping the political landscape in Washington and beyond.
