Stacey Abrams says Joe Biden supporters won’t switch to Trump
Stacey Abrams, a prominent Democrat, has broken her silence on President Biden’s candidacy, expressing her full support for the incumbent and dismissing the idea that recent debate fallout will sway liberal voters.
Abrams, a former Georgia State House minority leader known for refusing to concede her loss to Gov. Brian Kemp in the 2018 election, stated that there is no mass exodus from Biden’s camp to Trump among left-leaning voters.
“The anti-Biden narrative may be loud right now, but it is mostly confined to those deeply entrenched in news consumption or those seeking to create headlines,” Abrams asserted in an article for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“The majority of voters who supported Biden and need to do so again are already aware of his shortcomings, and they are not flocking to support a bombastic, fascistic liar,” she added.
Former President Trump has criticized Abrams on multiple occasions, particularly in relation to a “consent decree” involving Georgia officials and Abrams-affiliated political activists regarding ballot signature verification protocols in 2020.
Interestingly, Trump has somewhat praised Abrams while attacking Kemp, the rare conservative figure he openly criticizes.
“Having [Abrams] might actually be preferable to having your current governor, if you want my honest opinion,” Trump remarked during a rally in Perry, Georgia in 2021.
According to Abrams, the fallout from the Trump-Biden debate revolves around the theme of “performance versus principle.”
“Decent individuals may stumble, but liars continue lying,” Abrams remarked. “In the face of the latter, some have become fixated on alleviating anxiety rather than confronting the gradual erosion of democracy.”
Abrams argued that, between the two contenders, Biden is the only one who does not pose a threat to America’s democratic institutions.
She described Trump as a “self-serving criminal” embodying “authoritarian tendencies” that overshadow any concerns about Biden.
Abrams further urged Biden to remain in the White House and in the presidential race, warning that initiating a fresh start at this late stage could dilute the Democrats’ message and replace a man with a “substantial national track record.”
“Let’s not beat around the bush: The hypothetical benefits of a contested convention or a last-minute withdrawal pale in comparison to the potential consequences. President Joe Biden possesses the integrity, ethical standards, and experience needed to defeat Donald Trump in November,” Abrams emphasized.
“Our route to victory hinges on supporting Biden and recognizing the critical importance of this election.”
Abrams, who was unsuccessful in her 2022 bid against Kemp, conceded soon after the election.
The Trump campaign declined to comment for the purposes of this article.
