Suspect charged with Trump assassination attempt appears in court as officials provide details.
The FBI is currently investigating an apparent assassination attempt that targeted former President Donald Trump. The incident took place near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, aged 58, was apprehended in Martin County shortly after fleeing the scene. Routh faced federal charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. The authorities anticipate additional charges to be filed against him.
Fortunately, Trump was unharmed during the incident and was quickly relocated to a secure location. This marks the second assassination attempt against Trump in less than two months.
President Biden expressed relief that the former president was safe, stating that the Secret Service might require additional assistance and urging Congress to address their needs.
What Happened on Sunday?
During a press briefing on Monday, U.S. Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe detailed how an agent spotted a rifle in the shrubbery near the golf course perimeter while sweeping the area ahead of Trump. The agent took action, and Routh fled without firing the weapon.
Law enforcement officials recovered an AK-style rifle from the scene along with other items like backpacks and a GoPro camera. Cellphone location data indicated that Routh was in the vicinity for almost 12 hours before the incident occurred.
The suspect attempted to escape in a vehicle but was swiftly captured on I-95 in Martin County. Sheriff William Snyder mentioned that a witness provided crucial information that helped law enforcement track down the suspect. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Trump’s Response
After the incident, Trump remained at the club while security measures were evaluated at his Mar-a-Lago residence before finally returning there safely. Trump reassured his supporters through an email, confirming his safety and resilience: “Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!”
Reports from Fox News host Sean Hannity indicated that Trump and his friend Witkoff were playing golf when they heard gunshots. Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, mentioned that the former president was in good spirits.
Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her relief over Trump’s safety and stated, “Violence has no place in America.” President Biden also commended law enforcement for their efforts in ensuring Trump’s safety and emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards political violence.
Questions Surrounding Trump’s Security
The July assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania raised concerns about his security. A bipartisan House task force overseeing the matter requested a briefing from the Secret Service regarding the recent incident. The agency came under scrutiny previously for denying requests for increased security at Trump’s events.
Since then, security measures around Trump have intensified. However, as he is no longer the sitting president, the entire golf course was not under strict surveillance. Despite this, the Secret Service’s prompt actions in handling the situation were commended.
The case is still under investigation, and further details regarding the suspect’s motive and potential charges are awaited.
