Taylor Swift Fans Cause Another Excitement at Edinburgh Concert

Taylor Swift’s fans in Scotland are truly a force to be reckoned with. The British Geological Survey recently reported that seismometers in Edinburgh were triggered by the enthusiasm of Swifties at Taylor Swift’s three Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium shows held from June 7 to June 9. The seismic activity was so significant that earthquake readings were registered up to four miles away from the venue.

The monitoring stations around Edinburgh detected seismic activity generated by the concerts. Each evening had a similar seismographic pattern, with songs like ‘…Ready For It?, ‘Cruel Summer’, and ‘champagne problems’ causing the most significant seismic activity each night.

Upon closer analysis of the seismograph data, it was found that the most enthusiastic dancing occurred on the Friday night show. However, significant readings were generated by the crowds on all three nights. The scientific instruments used to detect the seismic activity were sensitive enough to pick up even the smallest vibrations, but the vibrations from the concert were unlikely to have been felt by anyone outside the immediate vicinity.

According to the BGS, the seismic activity was mainly due to fans dancing in time to the music, reaching its peak at 160 beats per minute during ‘Ready For It?’. The crowd was transmitting approximately 80 kW of power, equivalent to around 10 to 16 car batteries. The Friday night event recorded the most energetic movement, with 23.4 nanometres of motion compared to 22.8 nm and 23.3 nm on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The BGS’s national network of monitoring stations records around 300 naturally occurring earthquakes every year in the UK. Only 30 of these earthquakes have a high enough magnitude to be felt by people. They also record “induced seismic events” caused by human activities like sonic booms.

The Scottish concerts follow similar seismic events at Taylor Swift shows in Seattle and Los Angeles. The Friday night show in Edinburgh managed to break an attendance record for Scotland, drawing over 73,000 fans. The subsequent shows on Saturday and Sunday saw even larger crowds. In total, the three shows attracted 220,000 fans, making it a truly remarkable event.
