Taylor Swift helped UMPG to win.

Universal Music Publishing Group has emerged as the frontrunner in the music industry, claiming the top spot on the Hot 100 Songs publishers ranking for the second quarter of 2024. With an impressive 27.97% of the market share, this achievement was largely fueled by the remarkable contributions of Taylor Swift. Swift, along with her writing partner Jack Antonoff, who recently joined UMPG, dominated the chart with 19 songs. In fact, Taylor Swift’s compositions accounted for over a third of the 56 songs that UMPG had on the Hot 100 during the quarter, marking a significant increase from the previous quarter’s count.

Sony Music Publishing, a regular chart-topper, closely followed UMPG with a 27.13% market share and 57 tracks on the chart. Among their successes was the No. 1 song for the second quarter, Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby.” Warner Chappell Music secured the third spot with a 19.87% market share, showcasing hit tracks like Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” among the 47 songs they landed on the chart.

While Sony Music Publishing maintained its stronghold on the Top Radio Airplay ranking for the 13th consecutive quarter with a 27.64% market share and 66 songs, it was evident that UMPG and Warner Chappell also played key roles in the success of tracks like “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims. Warner Chappell retained its second-place position in the Top Radio Airplay publishers ranking for the third consecutive quarter with a 23.25% market share and 63 songs on the chart, while UMPG secured the third spot with 15.82% of the market and 43 songs.

Kobalt proved to be a force to be reckoned with, maintaining its position as the fourth-largest publisher on both the Hot 100 and Top Radio Airplay charts. With market shares of 10.74% and 9.44% respectively, Kobalt’s stakes in the top-charting songs solidified its standing in the industry. Despite facing challenges in the first half of the year, Hipgnosis delivered a strong performance, claiming the fifth spot on both rankings. Thanks to its piece of “Lose Control” and other notable tracks, Hipgnosis showcased a resilient presence in the music scene.

BMG, ranked sixth on both Top Radio Airplay and the Hot 100, showcased a 3.36% and 1.47% market share, respectively. This marked a slight decline from their previous rankings in the first quarter of the year. Independent publishers Reservoir Music, Position Music, and Sentric Music Publishing made notable appearances at the seventh, eighth, and ninth positions on the Hot 100 chart, each contributing to the music landscape with hit tracks like “Espresso,” “Beautiful Things,” and “End of Beginning.”

The music industry continues to witness dynamic shifts and fierce competition among top publishers, with each quarter bringing new surprises and achievements. As the landscape evolves, it is clear that creativity, collaboration, and strategic partnerships play crucial roles in shaping the success and dominance of publishers in the market. With talented artists and visionary creators at the helm, the future of music publishing looks bright and promising.
