Taylor Swift talks about her perfect boyfriend in an interview from when she was 13.
Ever since Taylor Swift was 21, a lot has changed in her life. But one thing that remains constant is her desire for an ideal relationship. In a newly shared audio clip from a 2011 interview with 60 Minutes, the young singer-songwriter opened up about the challenges of dating someone who cares too much about fame.
Swift, who was still a country musician at the time and just barely legal to drink, expressed her frustration with the disparity in comfort levels with fame between her and her past partners. She mentioned how it can be heartbreaking when things click but the other person is too concerned about public perception. “It’s so heart-breaking when things click, but your comfort level with fame is so different than [the person you’re dating],” she said. “‘Cause I don’t care … It doesn’t matter to me who’s looking, but it does to some people.”
Swift added, “You couldn’t really have a good relationship with someone who cares that much. It seems a little unnecessary to care that much about keeping people out.”
However, things seem to have changed for Taylor Swift in recent years. Since she started dating Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, in the summer of 2023, she has found someone who seems to embrace her fame and the public scrutiny that comes with it. Kelce has shown support for Swift and doesn’t seem fazed by her spotlight. “I have fun with it,” Kelce said of the public scrutiny. “It comes with the territory.”
One significant change in Swift’s life over the years is her decision to step into the political arena. After years of avoiding the subject, she finally broke her silence in 2018 by endorsing Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen for U.S. Senate. Since then, she has been vocal about her political beliefs, supporting candidates like Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. Swift even wrote songs like “Only the Young” and “You Need to Calm Down” that reflect her political views.
Considering her past stance on politics, it’s clear that 21-year-old Taylor would be surprised by her current involvement in political discussions. In the 2011 interview with 60 Minutes, she expressed her disinterest in singing about political issues. “As far as politics and who I want to be making decisions for our country and all that, I don’t really — I don’t really sing about that,” she said. “I don’t get melodies and ideas in my head that have to do with, you know, the issues of our economic climate.”
