Texas lawmakers want to include ‘political rhetoric’ in investigation of attempted assassination of Trump.

Over two dozen Texas lawmakers are calling for the House Oversight Committee to investigate the “political rhetoric” used against former President Trump in the assassination attempt that nearly took his life. The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability initiated an investigation into the assassination attempt after the former president was shot in the ear at a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania.

State Rep. Ellen Troxclair, R-Texas, spearheaded a letter to the committee and Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., on Wednesday, requesting an inquiry into “grotesque depictions of President Trump and the tens of millions of fellow Americans that support him as ‘enemies’ or ‘threats to democracy’ prior to the assassination attempt.”

The lawmakers wrote, “Americans deserve answers” and expressed gratitude for the committee’s investigation into the incident. They stressed the importance of understanding how the attempted assassination occurred and what measures will be taken to prevent such events from happening in the future.

The Republicans urged Congress to delve into the political rhetoric employed during the recent presidential campaign and its potential contribution to the escalating threat of political violence.

“While we cherish our constitutional right to free speech in this country, the constant incendiary rhetoric has a real and negative impact on our nation,” the letter emphasized. “The Oversight Committee has a unique opportunity to shed light on the impact this has on the American people and guide us back to a place of honest political discourse centered on policy discussions.”

Troxclair, representing Texas House District 19, was joined by 26 other Texas state representatives and 2024 nominees in penning the letter.

Senator JD Vance of Ohio, Trump’s recently announced 2024 running mate, seized the opportunity to blame President Biden for the assassination attempt. Vance posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the shooting, attributing the incident to the rhetoric perpetuated by the Biden campaign.

The investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Trump is a crucial step towards understanding the events leading up to the incident and ensuring the safety of public figures in the future. The political rhetoric employed during campaigns and its impact on the overall discourse in the country is a pressing issue that warrants further examination.

As the House Oversight Committee delves into the details of the assassination attempt, it is imperative to consider the implications of inflammatory language and its potential link to acts of violence. By fostering honest and constructive political discussions focused on policy positions, we can strive towards a more harmonious and productive political landscape.
