Tim Walz responds to GOP criticism of his military service

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has come under fire from the GOP for his military record following his selection as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate. Despite the scrutiny, Walz proudly defended his service, condemning Republicans for questioning his record during a campaign appearance in Los Angeles.

Republicans, led by Senator JD Vance, have accused Walz of exaggerating his military service, with Vance going as far as calling it “stolen valor garbage.” The focus has been on discrepancies in Walz’s rank at retirement and the timing of his departure from the Nebraska and Minnesota Army National Guards. Vance has suggested that Walz retired to avoid deployment to Iraq in 2005.

Walz, who rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major but retired as a Master Sergeant, did not complete the necessary coursework for the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. Records indicate he retired before his battalion was mobilized for deployment to Iraq, further fueling the allegations of exaggeration.

In response to the controversy, the Harris campaign updated language on their website to accurately reflect Walz’s rank and acknowledged that he had misspoken in remarks made in 2018 regarding combat experience. Addressing the issue during a solo campaign event, Walz emphasized his commitment to serving the country, having enlisted in the Army National Guard at the age of 17.

Expressing pride in his military service, Walz defended the honor of all service members and refrained from denigrating Vance or anyone else’s record. He extended gratitude to all who have worn the uniform, including his political opponent, Vance, while maintaining a stance of mutual respect.

Vance, in response, thanked Walz for his service but maintained that dishonesty should not be excused. Hinting at a potential discussion in a future vice presidential debate, Vance kept the issue alive while acknowledging the sacrifices made by service members.
