Top Democrats are angry because Biden avoided questions during the debate and they are unsure who is making decisions.

Several top Democratic lawmakers have expressed their frustration over President Biden’s handling of his poor debate performance, according to a recent report. Some members of Congress are calling on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to urge Biden to consider stepping aside.

Lawmakers are particularly upset that Biden did not reach out to Democratic leadership promptly after the debate, nor did he communicate with members in competitive races. This lack of communication has led some members to fear that Biden’s actions could jeopardize the Democrats’ chances of retaining the Senate majority or regaining control of the House in the upcoming November elections.

One anonymous House Democrat told Axios, “I don’t know who’s making decisions. Why isn’t Biden on the phone with congressional leadership? Everybody now thinks he could cost us the majority.”

The White House has stated that Biden spoke with Jeffries on Tuesday. Biden’s campaign spokesperson, Lauren Hitt, mentioned that the president has also spoken with multiple elected officials on the Hill and in battleground states since the debate.

According to the report, there is a growing concern among lawmakers that Biden may only be consulting with family members or individuals on his payroll when making decisions about his future in the race. As Biden’s inner circle shrinks, lawmakers worry that his family may be shielding him from outside criticism, even if it comes from friends.

During a campaign fundraiser in Virginia on Tuesday night, Biden attributed his poor debate performance to his extensive foreign travel in June, which included a visit to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. He admitted that he “decided to travel around the world a couple of times” and “didn’t listen to my staff.” Biden also acknowledged that he “came back and nearly fell asleep on stage.”

Following his trips to Europe, Biden spent two days resting in Delaware and another six days preparing for the debate at Camp David in Maryland. Reports suggest that his preparation did not start before 11 a.m., and the president was given time for an afternoon nap each day.

Despite the criticism, the White House defended Biden’s preparation by stating that he was working well and exercising before his campaign events. Even longtime Biden ally Rep. Nancy Pelosi expressed concerns about his debate performance during an interview on MSNBC, stating that it is a “legitimate question” to raise regarding his mental acuity and health.

Biden also agreed to an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, and major Democratic donors are now considering shifting their contributions to House and Senate candidates amid concerns over a potential second term for former President Trump. Even former critics of Trump supporters’ concerns about Biden’s age and mental fitness are now turning their frustration towards Biden’s post-debate handling rather than the debate itself.

“Strangely, we are getting to the point where it may not have been the debate that did him in, but the aftermath of how they’ve handled it,” a top Democratic operative told Axios.
